The Borough of Wyre was formed as part of the Local Government reorganisation in 1974. The main centres are Fleetwood, Thornton Cleveleys, Poulton, Garstang and Preesall.

Wyre Borough is marked by the shaded section on the map below. It consists of market towns and tiny villages, narrow country lanes and major trunk routes and includes a stretch of the M6, the first motorway built in Britain, opened in 1960.

Wyre shares its borders with the boroughs of Lancaster to the north, Preston to the east and Fylde to the south
